India Tourism » Places to See » Panch Mahal Panch Mahal The Panch Mahal is a 5 story summer palace, used by all of Akbar's
three wives and the other ladies of the court. It is a wonderful building,
that looks more like a fantasy than an architectural construction. It is 5 stories high, and open on all sides to the elements; the walls consist only of pillars. Each pillar is wonderfully carved, delicate, and different - while unfortunately you cannot climb up to the higher stories. The pillars don't look strong enough to hold up the 4 stories above, but as the building has been here since the 1580s, they must be stronger than they look! The palace is built so that each story is both narrower and shorter than the one below - the ground floor is large, perhaps some 130 by 40 feet, and the top story with a delicate cupola roof is only about 10 feet each way. In a hot environment (and F. Sikri is very hot indeed, for most of the year) this place would have been one of the coolest and therefore most pleasant places to be in the whole city. The guide told us that the first and chief wife, the Hindu one, got first choice of which story to occupy for the day, so she would choose the top one when the weather was at its hottest, and a lower one during the monsoon, so she would not get wet. The bottom story was at all times used by maidservants, however. The ground floor is also a passageway that leads from the courtyard towards the most formal part of the city, Akbar's halls of public and private audience. Agra India Tourism Reservation Form
